Speed and sleep dangerous along highways 195 and 26, state crash data shows

The detailed historical data shows the deadliest year for crashes along SR 195 and SR 26 was 2015 with a combined nine fatalities. The years with the highest numbers of combined serious crashes were 2009 and 2017 with 19 and 18 collisions, respectively.

Pullman schools replace water fixtures after testing finds high levels of lead

The state Department of Health reportedly tested 207 fixtures — such as sinks, bubblers and water bottle fillers — at five Pullman schools between Oct. 10-16. Almost all returned results below the EPA safety threshold for lead of 20 parts per billion.

Pullman police break down use of force techniques following recent backlash

In a presentation to the committee, Pullman Sgt. Greg Umbright emphasized the department has used physical force in just 37 incidents out of more than 12,000 calls for service this year. Thirteen of those incidents results in minor injuries. No one was hospitalized or killed.

Fire Dist. 12 introduces credit card policy after audit finds unaccounted charges

Fire Commissioner Lee Druffel said the district did not previously have a formal credit card policy and did not keep itemized receipts for all spending. (It does now.) During the audit period, the district also took on new spending authority and had some records staff turnover.

Nearly 300 ballots rejected over errors, signature issues in final count

Officials rejected approximately 300 Whitman County ballots for mismatched signatures, late postmarks or other disqualifying issues during the canvassing board review process earlier this week. Another 161 ballots received approval to continue to the final vote tabulation.

Late voter surge slows ballot scanning for preliminary count

A backlog of last-minute questions from voters slowed Whitman County election efforts Tuesday afternoon as staffers suspended scanning ballots and worked to answer dozens of calls, voicemails and emails from confused residents amid a late surge in voter turnout.
